Supporters of WASPI – Women Against State Pension Inequality – traveled to London on Wednesday 5th June. Swansea University UNISON helped fund the coach hire.
Campaigners have taken the government to the High Court for a judicial review into how ministers raised the retirement age for women. Women born in the 1950s claim the rise is unfair because they were not given enough time to make adjustments to cope with years without a state pension. The retirement age for women has increased from 60 to 65, in line with men, and will rise to 66 by 2020.
WASPI has spent four years campaigning for fair transitional arrangements for 1950s-born women. This would take the form of a bridging pension, not means-tested, between our original State Pension age and our new one, with compensation for those who have already reached State Pension age and lost out.
